5 Best Places to Propose on the National Mall in Washington, DC

5 Best Places to Propose on the National Mall in Washington, DC

The National Mall is one of those places in Washington, DC, where you can propose with the Lincoln Memorial behind you and then walk a few minutes and suddenly have the Washington Monument in the background of your engagement photos. And at the same time, the Mall also offers you little pockets of calm and quiet that feel surprisingly intimate.

That’s just of one of the reasons we love photographing proposals on the National Mall.

But the variety of spots the Mall offers makes choosing where to propose very important. Some spots give you that big, unmistakably DC feeling. Others are much quieter and offer you a little more privacy.

Here are five of our favorite places to propose on the National Mall, what we like about each one from a photographer’s point of view, and who each spot might be right for.

1.The DC War Memorial

The DC War Memorial might be our favorite National Mall proposal location for couples who want something that feels very DC without the crowds around the major monuments.

It’s tucked among a sheltering grove of trees between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, which makes it feel surprisingly private despite everything happening around it.

We also love the architecture. The white columns give you an elegant, beautiful, simple background that won’t take attention away from the two of you.

The relative isolation of the DC War Memorial means there are plenty of ways to do a proposal there without making the whole thing feel staged or intrusive. One of you can be waiting near the memorial while the other walks up, or you can simply arrive together and let the proposal happen naturally.

And you’re never far from the rest of the National Mall. So afterward, you can just walk a few steps to get a few couple’s portraits with the Lincoln Memorial or Washington Monument in the background..

Best for: Couples who want the proposal to be a little more private and away from the crowds.

2.The Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool

If you want Washington, DC to be unmistakably part of your proposal pictures, it’s hard to beat the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool.

There’s a reason this area shows up in so many iconic proposal photos.

No matter where you do the proposal, you’ve got an iconic DC landmark in the background. From the Lincoln Memorial steps, you can have the Reflecting Pool leading toward the Washington Monument behind you. From either end of the pool, you have the Lincoln Memorial in the photograph.

The National Mall is a public place, though. So there will be tourists, runners, school groups, and people sitting on the steps. On the plus side, that will give you that authentic DC feeling and add context to where you got engaged.

What it won’t do is give you much privacy. However, there are a couple of ways to get away from the crowds a little. One is doing your proposal in the early morning hours. Another is coming to the less-visited back side of the memorial, where you get a lovely view of Arlington National Cemetery in the background.

Best for: Couples that want a truly DC proposal experience.

3.Constitution Gardens

Most people don’t realize it, but the National Mall even offers locations with a more nature-y vibe. Constitution Gardens is one of those spots and feels completely different from the rest of the Mall. There’s water, grass, and trees, and once you’re inside the gardens, you won’t feel like you are in the middle of the city anymore.

And from a photography point of view, we like that it gives us more room to work. We can stay farther away before the proposal so your partner isn’t immediately wondering why a photographer might be following you.

As an added bonus, there are some cherry blossom trees nearby. So during peak bloom, you can get some couple’s portraits with the gorgeous blooms without having to battle the crowds near the Tidal Basin.

Best for: Couples that prefer a quieter proposal in a setting with more natural beauty.

4.The Jefferson Memorial and Tidal Basin

Speaking of the Tidal Basin, that part of the National Mall is one of the most popular and gorgeous spots for a proposal. And it’s little wonder, with the cherry blossom trees covering the area in pink and white in the spring and the stately Jefferson Memorial reflected in the waters..

You don’t necessarily need to propose right at or inside the Jefferson itself. In fact, from just about anywhere around the Tidal Basin, the memorial becomes part of the background rather than the entire photograph. And that keeps it from dominating the photos.

It’s during cherry blossom season that this part of Washington really shines. You won’t find a more beautiful location anywhere in the metro area during the spring. But the Tidal Basin is also extremely popular. So if you’re thinking about proposing there during peak bloom, get there at dawn and expect lots of crowds.

But we love the Tidal Basin outside of cherry blossom season as well. It is just as beautiful during the rest of the year.

Best for: Couples who want classic Washington DC scenery with lots of natural beauty as well.

5.The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is perhaps the most iconic proposal location in DC. But the best shots of it towering behind you aren’t right next to it. They’re from the grounds around it, which are enormous and give you many more options than you might realize.

The farther away you move from the monument, the more it becomes part of the landscape and the less it is a defining feature. And depending  where we photograph from, we can include the US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, or other parts of the National Mall in the background as well.

Because there’s so much open space, this location works especially well if you’d rather walk around together for a bit before popping the question instead of arriving at one very specific spot. And as a secret bonus, there’s a lovely little grove of cherry blossom trees not too far from the monument.

Best for:  Couples who want THE iconic DC backdrop for their proposal.

So, Where Is the Best Place to Propose on the National Mall?

There really isn’t one. The best location depends on what you want your proposal to feel like. So as you’re considering the different options, think about what is most important to you. Are you ok with the crowds around DC’s most famous landmarks? Or do you prefer privacy? Is the Neoclassical architecture of the monuments and memorials exactly what you want in the background of your photos? Or do you want a bit more nature in the images? The best part about the National Mall is that you can have any or all of this for your proposal!
