Pauline and Ben’s Fathom Gallery wedding was a good reminder of something we’ve learned as DC wedding photographers: You really don’t have to have a “traditional” celebration. In fact, the best weddings are the ones that are reflection of who the couple is and what brought them together. And Pauline and Ben’s was 100% authentically them.
From the moment they arrived at Fathom Gallery, it was clear that this bride and groom were doing things their way. Instead of a solemn march to the altar, Pauline did an impromptu dance that involved a lot of twirling and a chair. And instead of carrying the traditional bouquet of flowers, she decided to pay cheeky homage to her chosen career as a nurse. Pauline brought along a stuffed plague nurse done up in wedding attire, and Ben’s matching stuffed plague doctor “groom” made an appearance during the reception.
We love when couples bring their real personalities to their wedding celebrations. There’s no rule that says you have to carry flowers, and there’s certainly no reason why a wedding ceremony can’t include a little humor!
Unpredictable elements like that are one of the things we enjoy most about photographing weddings. You never quite know what people are going to do, and that’s what makes every event interesting!

And if someone wants to have a unique wedding that is completely and totally them, Fathom Gallery is the perfect venue! It’s one of the most flexible wedding venues anywhere in DC. Fathom Gallery definitely doesn’t dictate what a wedding should look and feel like!
For starters, it gives you the option to have your entire celebration in one place. The penthouse is perfect for getting ready. The outdoor rooftop is Fathom Gallery’s intimate signature ceremony space — something you won’t find anywhere else in DC. If the weather is bad, the indoor gallery area can host your exchange of vows, your reception, or both. All of which means you can spend more time enjoying the day!
Pretty much all of the gallery’s spaces have neutral decor, so you can bring your own ideas and not have to compete with an already heavily decorated venue. The rooftop has a bit of greenery but is otherwise open to whatever decorations fit your vision. Similarly, the indoor gallery area is essentially a blank canvas that you can easily transform into a space that fits your style and vision perfectly!

Pauline and Ben’s wedding is a pretty good example of why all of this matters. Their personalities were part of every moment of their celebration, from the stuffed plague characters to the impromptu and crazy dance floor that Pauline and her bridesmaids created in the penthouse.
In our experience, making your wedding your own is what is will make it special and unforgettable. It’s not about making everything look like a wedding you’ve seen somewhere else. It’s about having a day that feels right for the two of you. Just like Pauline and Ben did!
