Traditional ceremonies are important threads in India\u2019s vibrant cultural tapestries. There are seemingly hundreds playing out in private and public at any given moment. That said, some have especially great significance for individual families. Among these, the Seemandam and Valaikappu pregnancy ceremonies stand out. Their joy, blessings and anticipation for the arrival of a new life make them extra special. We had the honor to photograph each of these sacred events during a recent trip to Chennai and loved every minute of them. There were so many beautiful moments to capture! It was like the ceremonies were made for documentary photographers. What Is the Valaikappu Ceremony?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Valaikappu ceremony is also a traditional Tamil ceremony. It takes place during either the seventh or ninth month of pregnancy. Given that \u201cValaikappu\u201d translates to \u201cbangle-tying,\u201d it is not surprising that the ritual is also known as the \u201cbangle ceremony.\u201d The Valaikappu ritual brings good luck, and protects the mother and the unborn child. <\/span>During the ceremony, the pregnant woman’s wrists are adorned with green glass bangles, which are considered auspicious. The bangles are usually gifts from the mother-in-law or other elder female relatives. Guests usually sing traditional songs and perform rituals to bless the mother and the baby.<\/span><\/p>\n
