Why Colorful Engagements Photos Might Be Right for You

If you flip through our engagement portrait portfolio, you’ll notice a few unifying themes. What we hope stands out the most are the bright, bold colors in almost every one of the shots. Why? Because we love colorful engagement photos! We love them so much that those colors have become a stylistic signature that we never stray from.

Hopefully – given that you’re here reading this – you’re a fan of vibrantly colored portraits as well. Maybe you’re on the fence, though, or not sure whether colorful engagement pictures are right for you. If so, allow us to walk you through the reasons why we love colorful engagement photos so much. (And perhaps to make the case for why you might love them too!)

Colorful Engagement Photos Stand Out from the Rest

Are you the kind of person who wants engagement portraits that fit into some definition of what those photos are “supposed” to look like? (Think soft lighting, muted colors, “traditional” poses, etc.) Or are you looking for something unique? Something that grabs attention? Something that speaks to the specialness of your relationship?

There is no wrong answer, of course. Some people like the comfort of the safer choice. Others want pictures that stand out from the rest. If the latter sounds like the right fit for you, then colorful engagement portraits are the way to go. By virtue of their brightness and boldness, they can’t help but get noticed. And they tell the world that you and your partner are a couple who walks their own path, and that your relationship is special.

The World Expresses Itself in Bright Colors

The next reason why we love colorful engagement photos is because they fit with our broader approach to wedding and engagement photography. Our main style is documentary, which means we try to capture the “real-life” moments that show the world how your relationship is. An engagement session with us will involve more structure and posing, of course. But we still prefer to keep things as “true to life” as possible.

That is particularly true with regard to colors. The world is a bright and beautiful place, filled with exciting reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues and purples. So a more “realistic” approach to engagement photography means never toning those hues down. Instead, it means celebrating them, working them into our shots and using them to enhance the beauty of your relationship.

More Colors = More Artistic Possibilities!

We also embrace colorful engagement photography because we want to create art for you. We want you to love how you look in your portraits, of course. But we also want to make your pictures so beautiful that you’ll use them to decorate your home. So we’ll use lighting and compositional choices to add creativity to the pictures we take.

Color plays an important role in creating the drama you find in photographic art. How? By introducing more contrast into an image. The greater the differences between the light and dark areas of the frame, for example, the more visually striking the photo. The same is true when there are dramatically different colors in a picture. That sharp contrast can look absolutely stunning, but only when the colors are bright and bold. When they are muted, soft or dull, there is less contrast and a less artistically striking image.
