If you’re looking for a DC neighborhood that’s an awesome place for engagement photos, Georgetown is hard to beat. It has lots of lovely spots that will make your portraits look gorgeous! Georgetown’s streets are easily walkable, meaning you can get lots of different locations without it feeling like a slog. And it’s as “DC” as any place in the Nation’s Capital, so your photos will tell the world that the city has played a part in your love story. With this in mind, it was no surprise to us that Melissa and Jason chose it as the second location for their engagement photo session! (Click here to read about their first stop.) And from the beautiful pictures we took of them in the courtyard of Fathom Gallery Georgetown to the ethereal pictures of them we created on the neighborhood’s streets after dark, they got everything Georgetown has to offer!
Engagement Session at Fathom Gallery Georgetown
As we mentioned above, Melissa and Jason’s engagement photoshoot took place in two locations. First, we met them at the magical gardens around the Smithsonian Castle. We took a mix of creative and romantic engagement photos in that iconic location. Then we all drove across DC and reconvened at Fathom Gallery Georgetown.
We’ve said it many times before, but we’ll say it again. Fathom Gallery is one of our favorite wedding venues anywhere in the DMV! We’ve photographed a bunch of weddings at their main location on 14th Street NW. So needless to say, we were thrilled to hear that they were opening a new facility in Georgetown. And even more excited when they asked us to photograph their new space for them. (We took a lot of the pictures that are on the Fathom Gallery Georgetown homepage.)
The lovely courtyard behind the venue is one of the more unique spots anywhere in Georgetown. Tucked away from the busy streets and further shielded by lovely trees and hedges, Fathom Gallery Georgetown’s “backyard” is a beautiful oasis in the urbanity of DC. It’s an awesome place for an outdoor ceremony or a cocktail hour with a nature-y vibe. We thought it would also make for a unique and beautiful location for Georgetown engagement photos. So we reached out to Fathom Gallery Georgetown and arranged for them to let us in.
Romantic Fathom Gallery Georgetown Engagement Photos
In our opinion, the cozy confines of Fathom Gallery Georgetown’s back courtyard are perfect for more intimate pictures. As we mentioned above, the space feels tucked away from the hustle and bustle of one of DC’s busiest neighborhoods. So it has the right vibe for romantic photos of a couple cuddling up like no one else is around.
To really accentuate that feel, we used the aforementioned trees and hedges that are an integral part of the space. Just like we did in the Mary Livingston Ripley Garden, we photographed Melissa and Jason throughbreaks in the greenery. That isolated the couple in the frames and made them seem like the only two people in the world. Which is exactly how it feels to be in the arms of the person you love!
We also took advantage of the Fathom Gallery Georgetown courtyard’s other cool feature. Though it’s sheltered from the city around it, the space is still open-air. So it feels (and is) very outdoors. And on a nice day (like the one on which we photographed Melissa and Jason), you get a great view of the sky! The only challenge to incorporating it in an engagement photo is the angle. The trees and buildings encircling the courtyard mean that the open sky is basically over the couple’s heads. But with a little flexibility from the photographers and the couple, it’s possible to get some breathtaking images. Just like we did for Melissa and Jason!
Engagement Portraits on the Streets of Georgetown
As cool as Fathom Gallery Georgetown is for engagement photos, we wanted to make sure that Melissa and Jason’s portraits got a bit of everything that the neighborhood has to offer. So from there, we took them on a little tour of the streets of Georgetown.
On our way to our first stop, we took some awesome photos of Melissa and Jason walking down Georgetown’s famous brick sidewalks. We love wide-angle shots of couples walking towards the camera and try to make them a part of every engagement session. In addition to looking very expansive and impressive, they’re a great way to get couples talking, laughing and interacting naturally with each other. In Melissa and Jason’s case, it also meant we were able to get some of the gorgeous late fall colors into their pictures!
After capturing those images, we continued around the Fathom Gallery Georgetown building and stopped at the front. The entrance there has a really cool awning with theater lights, so we took some pictures of Melissa and Jason posing beneath it. Then we continued walking through the neighborhood. We got some fun shots of the couple throwing leaves in the air and quintessentially Georgetown photos of them posing on the area’s easily recognizable streets.
Imaginative Engagement Pictures in Georgetown
As the sun started to set and the Georgetown streets darkened, we used our off-camera flashes to create imaginative night portraits. We had the couple stand in front of an interesting lattice pattern on the exterior of a nearby house. Then we created cool silhouettes of Melissa and Jason using a few different colored lights. To wrap up this epic engagement session, we had Melissa and Jason pose under a couple of trees that were creating a sort of canopy over the sidewalk. The resulting images were a perfect capper on an awesome photoshoot – hauntingly beautiful pictures of a couple in love!
Thank you so much, Melissa and Jason, for having us take your engagement photos! We really enjoyed documenting that part of your love story and can’t wait to be there with you on your wedding day!
